| Childhood Cinema It all began back in 1979 when Norb’s father became the first on the block to have a home video camera. Norb loved watching movies and realized with this camera he could finally make movies of his own. His pal Rob, who lived up the street and had made silent 8mm short films with his sister, was just as excited to join in the movie making adventure with Norb. Together, they created many video shorts ranging from comedy to drama to adventure. Their favorite genre of all was horror, having been scared to death by movies such as Halloween, The Exorcist and The Shining. In 1983, Rob sold his motorcycle to buy a camera of his own. Kurt, the big kid from the other block who also loved horror flicks, as well as Sly Stallone films, joined in the fun of making movies and re-creating big cinema favorites, such as Rambo. While many kids their age started getting into trouble, Norb, Rob and Kurt’s movie making passion kept them out of it, most of the time. Every day after school, they would write and shoot scripts that allowed them to stab, shoot and blow up their friends. They did have some run-ins with the local police for using illegal fireworks for movie effects and once faced the barrel of an officer’s shotgun when she thought their prop guns were real. Their ultimate dream was to someday make a feature film, but that dream would have to wait. After high school, their movie making days came to a halt to make room for the next stage in their lives. College and Careers In 1992, Rob graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle with a degree in Music and Video Broadcasting, while Norb graduated with a double major in Broadcast Communications and Political Science from the University of Washington. They formed Bert & Bert Video Productions, shooting wedding and events, and for the next four years, produced a local cable comedy sketch show called Bert & Bert Theatre. They shot their first 16mm short film, Coup De Grace in 1995. In 1996, Rob switched careers and began working at Alaska Airlines to pay the bills. Norb formed Quantum Productions with business partner, Mike Lorrain (visual effects/sound recordist), and began producing corporate videos and television spots. Norb honed his skills producing, directing, editing, sound mixing and music composing - all of which would become essential components in creating Frayed. Kurt began a solid career in construction and construction management working for one company for 15 years. |
